T W I T T E R

Most of our audience on Facebook and Twitter are the parents and teachers in our community. With over 800 active followers on each of those platforms, we try and lean towards the interests of our older viewers. Although the same stories are promoted across all of our platforms, Facebook and Twitter carry a more sophisticated energy.

On Twitter, we also try to stay as up to date with the latest trends and current events as possible. In response to the 20th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, we took a dive into newer and older articles on the topics of gun control and gun violence. During the period of the Mueller Report, we informed our followers about the information in an easy to understand fashion, based on our Scot Scoop editor’s articles.

We've provided some examples, but you can find us on Twitter here and Facebook here.

Although our Facebook Page is titled Carlmont Highlander, it is what we use to promote stories from Scot Scoop, as well as notify the community of any school or local events.

Like Twitter, this platform is our primary way of  reaching parents and other adults in the community. We also make sure to let the community know when our latest issue of the newspaper or magazine is out. On the desktop view of our Facebook page, we've added links to our Issuu accounts.

To the left (of your desktop) you will see examples from our Facebook page.

Our Instagram story and Snapchat stories are used in the same way and reach a younger audience. These stories and snaps are the perfect place to produce short attention span content, short-lived content with minimal but sufficient information, for our viewers to tap through and understand features or in-depth articles.

Taking inspiration from publications like Washington Post, our social media team works to produce what's referred to as "top snaps." These top snaps are simple graphics that usually contain the headline, category, and publication. They usually are made to inform our audience about current events, trends, or, mainly, advertise for our online publication, Scot Scoop.

On Snapchat, top snaps are accompanied with a link to the story so that users can simply swipe up to get the full scoop. However, on Instagram, there's no option to attach a link, so we try and keep top snaps relevant; these are the stories you'll find at the top of our site so that they're easily accessible.

Stringers are multi-panel graphics. These get posted on Snapchat and Instagram, and follow almost the same structure as top snaps. The difference, is that stringers go more in-depth, and are often tied to a feature story either from Scot Scoop, Scotlight, The Highlander, or ScotCenter. They also address current events or trends.

The first panel is meant to catch the viewer's attention, while the panels following it begin to explore the topic or feature, diving into statistics, quotes, and more.

To ensure that stringers really are exploring more complex issues and articles, it is required for them to be at least three panels in length.

We also post editorials from Scot Scoop, Highlander, or Scotlight to inform and advertise to our audience that a new issue is published.

To the right (of your desktop) you will see examples of top stories and top snaps, stringers, and editorial posts.

Our Instagram posts are made with simple Photoshop templates. The Instagram feed is used to promote articles from our online website, Scot Scoop.

The post contains a headline, the feature photo, the name of the publication, and the lede. We've embedded our Instagram feed below to give you a sense of what it looks like at the moment. We caption each post with a brief summary of the article that states the main facts and is followed by a quote.

With the introduction of our newsmagazine, Highlander, we put together a campaign to excite our readers and followers. On our Instagram  and Snapchat stories, our team posted photos of students designing their spread, a video illustrating the production process made by our video team, Scot Center, a video of our chalk wall promoting the inaugural issue of Highlander, a subscription flyer, our Editor-in-Chief's worries and hopes, along with our faculty advisor's definition of a newsmagzine, and a gif of our newsmagazine.

On Twitter and Facebook, we reminded our followers to subscribe to receive our inaugural issue along with next year's eight issues.

On the right (of your desktop) you'll see each post.
